Worker Exposure Programs
Industrial workers face potential exposure to hazardous substances as a result of routine plant operations, as well as during plant closures, expansions and renovation projects. Proper management and
planning is essential in maintaining a safe working environment.Protection of workers from potentially hazardous substances (e.g., VOCs, corrosives, cyanides/sulfides) used at industrial facilities
often requires the use of specialized equipment (e.g., ventilation systems) and appropriate Personnel Protection Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, coveralls and respirators. Periodic monitoring of the
level of airborne contaminants is another important aspect of a prudent management plan. VEI can provide a detailed evaluation of potential exposures associated with such activities and can assist
in the preparation of appropriate written plans/procedures associated with the handling and management of hazardous substances routinely used in manufacturing activities. Workers must also be aware
of potential exposures to hazardous substances encountered during demolition work. Demolition of building materials can occur during plant closures, expansions and renovations. Many building materials
and equipment/systems contain hazardous substances (e.g., lead based paint, asbestos) within paints or coatings. Residual materials (e.g., paints, solvents, plating solutions, etc.) remaining in
pipes, tanks, vats, sewer lines, etc. may also be discovered during demolition activities. A release of these materials could pose a risk to workers in close proximity to the activity zone. In
addition to potential direct exposure (i.e., spillage, splashing, dust inhalation, etc.) to materials uncovered during demolition work, other activities that could result in an unacceptable exposure
to potentially hazardous substances include abrasive blasting, sanding, cutting, torch burning or welding of steel structures. VEI is experienced in evaluating potential exposure scenarios related
to demolition work at sites that historically used potentially hazardous substances or building materials. VEI can also provide written plans and specifications to establish operating procedures
designed to protect onsite workers and contractors from potential hazards associated with the demolition of such building materials. |
